On 26 September, the Commission approved an administrative variation of an electricity generation licence held by Energy Generation Pty Ltd to clarify that the generation plant includes a 1.5 MW battery storage system.

When the licence application was originally assessed in April 2016, no battery storage systems had been licensed and it was unclear whether battery storage systems were captured under the definition of ‘generation’ for the purposes of licensing under the Electricity Act 1996.

The Commission has confirmed that battery storage systems are captured by the definition of "generation" of electricity in s 4(1) of the Electricity Act. Accordingly, the Commission has varied Energy Generation Pty Ltd’s licence to include a 1.5 MW battery storage system as specified in the original application.

A copy of the licence may be accessed from the Commission's licence register.
