The Commission has received an application from the Barunga West Council for a water retail licence variation in accordance with the Water Industry Act 2012 (WI Act). The applicant is seeking to expand its community wastewater management system operations into Fisherman Bay, providing sewerage services to residential and non-residential customers.

In assessing a water retail licence variation application, the Commission considers the application against the relevant licensing provisions set out in the WI Act. It will also have regard to its primary objective under the Essential Services Commission Act 2002, being the protection of the long-term interests of South Australian consumers with respect to the price, quality and reliability of essential services, and other factors as they apply to the Commission’s role as an economic regulator of the South Australian water and sewerage service industry.

In making its assessment, the Commission consults with other regulators, including the Technical Regulator, SA Health, the Environmental Protection Authority and the Department for Environment and Water, which have regulatory roles in the water and sewerage service industry.

The application submitted by the Barunga West Council is subject to a public consultation period closing on 25 February 2025. Interested parties wishing to make a submission on the application should prepare a submission, which addresses the criteria noted above.
