Call for Expression of Interest

The Energy and Water Ombudsman (SA) Limited (Energy & Water Ombudsman SA) is an independent body established to facilitate the prompt resolution of complaints and disputes between consumers of energy, water and sewerage services and the providers of those services. It aims to do this by providing a free, independent, accessible, fair and informal service to consumers.

The Energy & Water Ombudsman SA is a public company limited by guarantee and its board consists of nine directors. The Essential Services Commission (Commission) is required to nominate four consumer Directors for appointment to the Energy & Water Ombudsman SA Board. As the terms of the current consumer Directors are all due to expire over the next 12 months, the Commission is seeking expressions of interest for four consumer Director positions. The positions are for independent Directors, being non-industry Directors that represent consumers of electricity, gas and water services or public interest groups relevant to such services. The Energy & Water Ombudsman SA Board is responsible for approving the appointment of the Commission’s nominees to the Board.

The Commission aims to achieve a balance and variety of consumer interests and perspectives among the membership of the Energy & Water Ombudsman SA Board. The Commission encourages people based in both metropolitan and rural/regional areas to apply, and welcomes applications from individuals that have a knowledge of the issues that impact upon consumers in accessing electricity, gas and water services. The Commission particularly encourages applications from people representing consumers from remote areas, those that are Indigenous, culturally and linguistically diverse, financially disadvantaged, and/or are small to medium sized businesses. The four board appointments commence on the following dates over the next 12 months; 30 September 2017, 23 October 2017, 27 February 2018 and 30 July 2018.

The Board has primary responsibility for the formal administration of the functions of the Energy & Water Ombudsman SA, policy matters, oversight of the operational matters and maintaining the independence of the Ombudsman. The Ombudsman, Mr Sandy Canale, has responsibility for the day-to-day operations and the resolution of individual complaints.  These roles are complementary and, generally, the Ombudsman will attend meetings of the Energy & Water Ombudsman SA Board as an observer and advisor as appropriate.

Further details on the Energy & Water Ombudsman SA, including its 2015-2016 Annual Report, Corporate Governance Statement, Constitution and Charter are available at www.ewosa.com.au. The website also includes details regarding the current composition of the board, which includes an independent chair, currently, Mr Peter Bicknell. Applicants are strongly encouraged to review this additional information prior to making an application.
