Water retail licence application for exemption – University of South Australia - Archived

The Commission has received an application from the University of South Australia for an exemption from the requirement to hold a water retail licence under the Water Industry Act 2012 (Water Act). University of South Australia provides non-drinking water to one non-residential customer.

In assessing an exemption to a water retail licence, the Commission considers the application against the relevant licensing provisions set out in the Water Act. It will also have regard to its primary objective under the Essential Services Commission Act 2002, being the protection of the long term interests of South Australian consumers with respect to the price, quality and reliability of essential services and other factors as they apply to the Commission's role as an economic regulator of the South Australian water and sewerage service industry. The

Commission may only issue an exemption under the Water Act with the approval of the Minister for Environment and Water.

In assessing an applicant against the above criteria, the Commission consults with other regulators, including the Technical Regulator, SA Health, Environmental Protection Authority and Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources which have regulatory roles in the water and sewerage service industry.  

The application submitted by University of South Australia is subject to a public consultation period closing on 17 July 2020. The Commission welcomes submissions on any matters relevant to the application.
